VPN – Virtual private network

What are VPN’s after all ?

A VPN is a secure connection over internet , like an additional layer of encryption over the network for more security. The encrypted connection ensures that the sensitive data is securely and safely transmitted over the internet. Enough fancy words…

In simpler words

Imagine internet as a vast open field , big enough to fit all the websites there’ve ever been. And those websites as stores where you can visit to get items , see paintings and get new friends. But anyone can follow you along you over there or monitor your online activities , or steal your sensitive data. VPN comes as a savior . It basically disguises you so that others cannot see you . VPN masks your IP , encrypts your data and helps you connect to your connection. It disguises your data and makes it hard for anyone to monitor you.

Ok I understood VPN !!!

How does VPN work then?

Let’s say you’ve a courier which you want to send to a friend. While using VPN , you’ll basically put it in a box and lock it i.e. encrypt it . And your friend is having key to the lock. The box is then couriered to your friend and he can unlock and get the data.

In this scenario , the box is the data . The lock is the encryption which cannot be intercepted by others . The traffic or the data is first encrypted and then rerouted to the VPN server . After which it is sent to the Internet resource you have been trying to access.

Why use a VPN then ?

There are multiple reasons and can vary from person to person but to list a few , here are some :

  1. Privacy : As mentioned above , the data cannot be intercepted or monitored , but of-course it is not 100% secure and foolproof. If you don’t want your data to be monitored and want to be private over the internet , then you should certainly go for VPN’s .
  2. Security : Wifi networks are quite notorious. Those are always monitored for sensitive information and your sensitive data can be compromised for free internet. In such case you can use VPN’s as they encrypt your data (as mentioned above) and thus your data is safe.
  3. Unblocking Content : Some content is demographically blocked by some streaming services , in such case you can use VPN to unblock and view it.
  4. Torrent anonymously :Downloading content from Torrent can raise security and legal concerns. But because VPN’s encrypt your data, thus you are safe.

Which VPN should I use then ?

It’s an overwhelming choice , no doubt. But there are some key things you should look for before choosing one. First of all it should be a company with good reputation regarding security and everything. You certainly should not buy from companies which were part of data leaks, Right ? A kill switch , which will disable the connection completely if the VPN connection drops. Number of simultaneous connections allowed , And most importantly your budget friendly.

The choice at last is yours but some famous names will be NordVPN , ExpressVPN and Surfshark.
